Rock Hall CEO Tries To Diffuse Kiss Controversy
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame CEO Joel Peresman is getting tired of the ongoing slams from Kiss frontman Paul Stanley over the fact that only the four original members of the band -- Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss -- are being inducted, and not the six bandmembers that followed in their wake.
Peresman spoke frankly to Rolling Stone about the situation with Stanley, explaining, "I don't like all the sniping back and forth, though mostly it's been forth. And I totally understand his point of view. What he's failing to understand is that there are certain acts that are nominated and brought in on their entire body of work, up until the day before the nominating committee meets. They are still evolving bands that are breaking new ground. With Kiss, there wasn't a single person we spoke to that didn't feel the reason these guys were being inducted was because of the four original members. It's an incredibly unique situation. I can't think of another band, outside of Gwar, that has members that are dressed up in costumes. You basically have these new members that are replicating exactly and playing the music that was created by the two other members that are being inducted."
He went on to address the fact as to why Kiss' current guitarist and drummer for Kiss are not being inducted on Thursday night (April 10th): "I appreciate how Tommy (Thayer) and Eric (Singer) have filled in and the way they do things. They are fine musicians and I'm sure they're lovely guys, but they are basically replicating the two members that are getting inducted. How could we have asked Ace and Peter to accept the award and then have other people in their guise playing their music? They probably wouldn't have even come. They were very clear about that. . . Frankly, I'm really, really happy that Kiss are being inducted. It should have happened a while ago. The four of them will get up, accept their award, say what they want to say and then we'll move on."
Paul Stanley maintains that the Rock Hall needs to have a definitive criteria for selecting what band members get into the Rock Hall -- rather than allowing some bands to take only its original, or certain members, with others entering the Hall with every member: "Clearly, when you’ve got a busload of Grateful Dead (members) who have been inducted and guys in the (Red Hot) Chili Peppers, who nobody knows who they are -- cause they’ve played on the very earliest albums -- are inducted, and when the original drummer in Rush, who played on a classic album -- John Rutsey -- isn’t inducted. . .

Y’know, the list goes on and on with the inconsistencies. The only consistencies are the inconstancy. So, it really comes down to who they like and what they want to do." with the Roots; Tuesday's show will feature Yusuf Islam -- formerly known as Cat Stevens; Wednesday will feature Stevie Nicks pinch-hitting for Linda Ronstadt along with surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.
