Bruce Springsteen Covers Van Halen In Tour Opener
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band opened their North American tour last night (April 6th) in Dallas, Texas at the March Madness Music Festival at Reunion Park. Springsteen got the rain soaked crowd up on their feet with a left field, one-two opening punch of Van Halen's 1984 classic, "Jump" straight into "Badlands." Last night marks the first time Springsteen has ever dipped into the Van Halen songbook in concert. Although Steve Van Zandt was absent due to filming duties in Norway for his Netflix series, Lilyhammer, the "First Lady of E Street" Patti Scialfa was back on board for last night's show.

The concert featured few rarities, but did include such classics as "Spirit In The Night," "Cover Me," "The River," a pair of cuts from Nebraska -- "Atlantic City" and "Johnny 99," along with a cover of the Isley Brothers' rave-up, "Shout," and show-closing solo acoustic rendition of "Thunder Road."

Bruce Springsteen is one of the few rock performers to seemingly never have a bad night onstage. He was asked if this is something that came naturally, or was it something he perfected over the years on the road: "Just in the bars, in the groups, y'know, where you had to play for, y'know, drunken audiences, that weren't necessarily that interested in listening to you, so you had to win the audience all the time. (Laughs) You always had to win the audience. For the first eight years of your career -- with the exception of when you played locally -- you played unheard."
