Billy Joel Tackles AC/DC Classic With Brian Johnson In NYC
Only a night after collaborating with Jimmy Fallon for an iPad doo wop performance on NBC’s The Tonight Show, Billy Joel brought AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson onstage on Friday night (March 21st) in New York City. Billy, who’s been an unabashed fan of the band and slipped bits of AC/DC songs into his setlists over the years, welcomed Johnson during his latest gig as part of his Madison Square Garden residency. Thursday night's (March 20th) Tonight Show appearance found Billy and Fallon collaborating on a state-of-the-art duet on the Tokens' "The Lion Sleeps Tonight."

Billy’s recent shows are a rare example of a rock show where everyone walks away happy. Friday's show featured the "Piano Man" tackling such deep nuggets as the 1976 Turnstiles classic "I've Loved These Days," along with "Surprises" and "Where's The Orchestra?" from 1982's The Nylon Curtain. Between songs, Billy teased the crowd with dips into the Beatles’ "When I’m Sixty-Four" and "A Hard Day’s Night," another runthrough the Tokens’ "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," Jonathan Richman’s "Springtime In New York," and Elton John’s "Your Song."

Billy Joel told us that he keeps the main fan base happy by slaying them with hit after hit during the show, and gets to keep himself and the band sharp by digging deep into his back catalogue by playing some obscure older tunes -- which the diehards eat up: "We actually enjoy playing those tracks more than the hits. Number One, because we don’t get to play them that often, and Number Two, because, y’know, they’re different. So, we pulled a few chestnuts out, some things didn’t work, some things did work and they kind of stayed in the set. Songs like ‘Zanzibar’ from 52nd Street, because we got a trumpet player now, and the guy just blows the audience away when he plays. And I took ‘Root Beer Rag’ out of the mothballs -- I wasn’t even sure if I was going to be able to play that anymore."
