Ray Davies And Donovan Headed To The Songwriters Hall Of Fame
The Kinks' Ray Davies and Donovan lead the inductees for the 2014 Songwriters Hall of Fame. The gala induction ceremony is slated for Thursday, June 12th at New York City's Marriott Marquis Hotel. In addition to the two '60s legends, Graham Gouldman, who later went on to co-found 10cc, will enter the Hall and is best known for writing the Yardbirds' "Heart Full Of Soul" and "For Your Love," the Hollies' "Look Through Any Window," and "Bus Stop" -- along with co-writing the 10cc classics "I'm Not In Love" and "The Things We Do For Love."
Also entering the Hall of Fame is legendary Elvis Presley songwriter Mark James, the composer of "The King's" classics "Suspicious Minds," "Always On My Mind," and "Moody Blue" -- not to mention B.J. Thomas' "Hooked On A Feelin.'" Rounding the class of 2014 out is Jim Weatherly, who co-wrote Gladys Knight & The Pips' "Midnight Train To Georgia" and "You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me," among others. Additional special award honorees will be announced soon.
Ray Davies, who wrote such legendary Kinks classics as "You Really Got Me," "Waterloo Sunset," "Come Dancing," "Lola," "Sunny Afternoon," "All Day And All Of The Night," "Celluloid Heroes" and many more, insists that songwriting is just as mysterious to him today as it was when he started: "There are no rules to songwriting, and I'd like to think it gets easier because I know more, but the more one does, the more you realize how limitless it is, y'know? There's so many different ways of writing things. There are no hard-and-fast rules, and it doesn't get any easier. It does get a little trickier the more you know. You think you know what you're doing -- actually, you don't know what you're doing."
