The Who Eying First Studio Album In Eight Years
In typical Who fashion, both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend want to record a new album, have the material to record a new album -- yet remain unsure whether or not they will record a new album. The pair is gearing up for the Who's 50th anniversary tour in 2015, and although a new career-spanning compilation is most likely in the cards, it remains up in the air whether the band will record a new studio set before the tour -- which likely will be the band's final major arena road trek.
Daltrey spoke about the prospects of the band recording a followup to 2006's Endless Wire collection, telling NME, "Pete's got hundreds of songs so the only question is whether we get around to it, but he wants to make an album and I'm always ready and raring to go. We'll see. I never know what I'm doing next, it's about what comes through my letterbox tomorrow, but I don't see why we wouldn't. My voice is still in good shape. The hearing isn't so great, but the voice is fine."
He touched upon his upcoming joint album with former Dr. Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson, called Going Home, which will be released in March: "It's a tricky one. Wilko and I have got a show on February 25th, but as I'm sure you know Wilko has terminal pancreatic cancer so we can't make plans for things like that. His tumour is like a grapefruit and getting bigger by the day, but I will say if he's still with us, and let's hope he is, we will do something. It'll only be a quick support slot, but we'll be there."
Roger Daltrey told us that age issues aside, once the house lights go down the Who are still as electrifying as ever: "I think the band's playing better than ever. The energy -- we may be older in ourselves and individually -- or collectively not have as much energy; but the music generates as much energy -- if not more -- than it did in the '60s and the '70s."
