Ringo Starr Says He Still Loves LA
50 years after first coming to America with the Beatles, Ringo Starr is still in love with the U.S. He spoke about landing in America when he was only 23-years-old, telling Variety, "It was such an incredible moment. Americans won’t understand, but we’re English and we came to America, and that’s where all the music I love came from. A couple of years before that, I tried to immigrate to America, to Houston, Texas, to be near my blues hero, Lightnin’ Hopkins. But the paperwork was too much for an 18-year-old."
Although Ringo splits his time between L.A., London, and Monte Carlo for tax purposes -- he admits he's still got a soft spot for Southern California: "You ask anybody who’s ever met me: I love L.A. I love the relaxed atmosphere here, and I have a lot of good friends here, a lot of musicians. It just suits my makeup. . . I can wander around L.A., wander around Monte Carlo, wander around London. London’s always interesting because taxi drivers always say, ‘Hey, what are you doing here?’ If I’m hassled now, they know I don’t sign autographs. I’d rather say, ‘Hi, how ya doing?’ and move on. I’m shopping. I’m going to movies. I’m doing whatever’s going on at the time."
He went on to say: "I’m in L.A. now. I love the weather. I love the casualness. I have a little studio at home. And if you can play and you ring my bell, you’re on the record."
Ringo is currently working on his latest solo album in L.A., which follows the pattern of his last two albums -- 2010's Y Not and his last studio set, Ringo 2012: "Y'know, the creative brief was that I was sitting at home with nothing better to do in L.A.

I had Pro Tools and I had a few synthesizers in one of the bedrooms we sort of transferred into a studio -- 'cause you can do 'em anywhere now. I just started putting stuff down, playing the synthesizer to get rhythm patterns, and the notes of course, and taken I would play drums to whatever I did -- and that would give it the color through the verses and the choruses. It would just sort of split it up into 'this could be a song' -- but I had no words, I had no melody."
