Sting Earns $2K A Day From Puff Daddy Sample
Sting earns $2,000 a day -- a whopping $730,000 a year -- from Puff Daddy's 1997 sampling of "Every Breath You Take" for his Notorious B.I.G. tribute, "I'll Be Missing You." Celebrity Net Worth posted the details of how the use of Sting's melody from the chorus -- not to mention the sample of Andy Summers' signature guitar riff from the 1983 Police chart-topper -- on the tune sung by B.I.G.'s widow Faith Evans, netted Sting the lion's share of the royalties.

The report on Ultimate Classic Rock, explained how Puff Daddy could've saved a ton of revenue by simply getting on the horn with Sting prior to the song's release, posting, "Puff Daddy never asked permission from Sting for the sample, which would have probably allowed him to pay out just 25 percent of the publishing royalties. Instead, due to copyright law, Sting was able to lay claim to 100 percent of them. The track sold seven million copies and won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group."

Sting told us that having his music bend with the times to take on new shape is part of his role as the song's writer and principle performer: "It breathes, y'know, it infuses new life into them, new blood into them, new interpretation. My job is to keep these songs alive. Y'know, this is my life's work and I want to keep interested as long as I can -- I want to keep the audience interested as well. So throwing them novelty and surprise is the key element."
