Brian Wilson & Jeff Beck Set For 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon'
Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck are taking their tour to the tube next week. The pair will perform together as the musical guests on NBC's Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, October 10th. The pair's joint tour, which is receiving great notices, features Wilson accompanied by his acclaimed side band of nearly 15 years, along with fellow Beach Boys co-founding guitarists Al Jardine and David Marks. Joining the tour for select dates is early-'70s Beach Boy, South African-born Blondie Chaplin, who sang Wilson's group classic, "Sail On Sailor." The tour features both Wilson and Beck sitting in with each other's bands.
Brian Wilson, who is the lone survivor of his immediate family -- including his younger brothers and bandmates Carl and Dennis Wilson -- carries the weight of the Wilson's musical legacy on his shoulders. We asked him, if knowing what he knows now about life, what he would've said to the 24-year-old kid writing and producing the Beach Boys' Smile: "I woulda said, 'Don't take any more drugs!' I would say, 'Stop taking drugs!' -- if I was able to talk to myself when I was 24, but I can't."
Jeff Beck admitted that he can barely tolerate going back and listening to his work once he's signed off and released it: "If we're gonna regenerate an old number, or revamp an old number, then I listen to the original with the band because the chops are really antique compared to what I can do now, but there's a certain amusing charm about it. The thing that strikes me is not so much my playing, but what it was, y' know, what the tune was, or the riff, that went underneath it. I can't bear to listen to myself anyways (laughs)." )
Al Jardine reunited onstage with Brian Wilson for a series of dates in 2006 and 2007, and toured the world with him as part of last year's Beach Boys 50th anniversary tour. He told us says that over 55 years after meeting Wilson on the football field in high school, he's pretty much the same guy as he was at 16: "He's such a great guy. He never surprises you with his wit and his charm and his naivete. He's all those things and more. And he has no filters, what you get is what you get, but honesty in its purest form."
