Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck kick off their first joint tour tonight (September 27th) in Hollywood, Florida at Hard Rock Live.
Joining the pair as part of Wilson's band will be fellow Beach Boys co-founders Al Jardine and David Marks. Appearing with the band on select dates -- including tonight's show -- is '70s-era Beach Boy, Blondie Chaplin, best known for singing Wilson's legendary 1973 hit for the band, "Sail On Sailor." The shows will feature Beck sitting in with Wilson's band -- as well as Wilson and his musicians cross pollinating during Beck's own set -- before all the musicians join together to close the show.
Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck have been busy working together on Wilson's upcoming solo album. We asked Wilson what exactly Beck brings to his musical pallet: "Well, the thing is, he brightens things up with his guitar. He's such a great guitar player that it brightens up the tracks, y'know? It brightened 'em up. It makes 'em better."
We asked Wilson what it was like reconnecting musically with Blondie Chaplin during the album sessions after 30 years: "Well, he looks a lot different, y'know? Well, it was great to see him, he's a great singer, he sang on one of my songs and he's just great. He's going to play Hollywood, Florida; Vegas; New York; Hollywood Bowl -- he's gonna play about four or five concerts with us."
Wilson told us that he's thrilled to have his high school buddy Al Jardine hitting the boards with him every night out on the road: "Well, he's a great singer, one of my favorite singers, and he's always good -- he never ever screws up. He's always good."
Brian Wilson has known David Marks most of his life, with the Marks family living across the street from the Wilson house in Hawthorne, California. Wilson clearly loves being around Marks both on and off the stage: "David is a very, very, good musician. He's a good singer and he's a very, very good musician. And he loves playing on my shows -- he loves it."
David Marks, who began making music with Brian Wilson and his brothers Dennis and Carl when he was still in elementary school, explained what makes the Beach Boys' music live on from generation to generation: "The Beach Boys actually symbolize a happier time. People are drawn to it -- and are continually drawn back to it, because mainly people wanna feel good, and the music is just feel-good music, what can I say? And it reminds everyone of happier times, too."
