Lou Gramm Still Hoping For Foreigner Reunion With Mick Jones
Although Mick Jones has gone on record stating that there are no plans for Lou Gramm to rejoin Foreigner -- Gramm is itching to reunite. The pair's performance of "I Want To Know What Love Is" and "Juke Box Hero" in June at the Songwriters Hall Of Fame marked the first time the pair has performed together in a decade after Gramm left Foreigner for a second time. Gramm recently released his critically acclaimed autobiography, Juke Box Hero: My Five Decades In Rock N' Roll, which deals with his often tumultuous relationship with Jones and his recovery from both his battle with substance abuse and near fatal brain tumor in 1997.
Gramm spoke frankly about playing with Jones again, telling "Mick and I have renewed our friendship, we were both inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame a few months ago in New York City. . . and we renewed the friendship and we performed together that night. It was a lot of fun. So I think, to me, that's the most important thing -- that a guy that I created with, and spent a good portion of my life performing with, that we do not remain strangers -- the friendship is now renewed again."
When pressed about any plans to perform with Jones, Gramm said, "Don't know. . . I'm wide open to any plans. I would love to do something with my old band mate again. I think it would be fun."
Mick Jones, who is the sole original member of Foreigner still recording and touring with the band, explained that he had sensed for a while that Lou Gramm was seeking greener pastures prior to their split: "Through the '90s, y'know, Lou and I were kind of really not seeing eye-to-eye. And I always felt since the late-'80s and '90s that Lou was far more interested in doing a solo career. So I'd been fighting a long time and I just wanted to resuscitate the band and see if I could really present a band like I felt Foreigner deserved to be."
Jones told us that he's thrilled with the fact that the older the songs get -- the younger the audience seems to be: "Luckily, we have a lot of great attendance at our shows and it's fun playing for younger folk. There's a lot of interest from younger people that must've heard it passed down from their parents, their siblings or whatever. Y'know, some nights you look out there and you wonder what year it is. It's like kids singing the songs, know the lyrics, go crazy and it's like, wow, am I still. . . is this still happening, y'know (laughs)?" )
Foreigner performs on Friday (September 27th) in Norfolk, Nebraska at Divots Event Center.
Lou Gramm will next perform on October 5th in Tobique, NB at the River Valley Civic Center.
