Cher Turns Down Sochi Olympics Performance
Cher has revealed that she turned down the opportunity to perform at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi because of the country's anti-gay legislation. Cher told the Canadian publication Maclean, "I can't name names but my friend called who is a big oligarch over there, and asked me if I'd like to be an ambassador for the Olympics and open the show. I immediately said no. I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there."
She went on to say that her friend offered her a more optimistic perspective on the situation in Russia and said that the Russian people don't feel the way the government does.
Cher also spoke out about Lady Gaga and Madonna -- who have recently faced controversy after speaking out against Russia's anti-gay legislation. She said, "Who knows how she will evolve, but Gaga has an idea for herself and she follows it. Madonna was the same way. Madonna said and did what she wanted, whenever she wanted and she was ahead of the curve. Always."
Cher added, "She had her ear to the ground more than anyone."
