Elvis Costello Writing His Memiors, Prepping Stage Musical
Elvis Costello is keeping busy these days as he preps for an upcoming acoustic tour, releases his first collaboration with the Roots, and finally writes his autobiography. Costello spoke about the process to Mojo, and explained, "It's not a typical memoir because there's an account of you on the Internet now, so why would you argue with that? The only thing of value would be something nobody else could possibly know, because it's in your head."
Costello's long and storied career finds him working on new tunes for an upcoming musical adaption of his 1998 album with Burt Bacharach, Painted From Memory. He revealed an important lesson he learned in his years as a working songwriter and performer: "You've always got people walking in and out of the door, unless you're in the business of trying to rule the world and having as many people as possible like you for the most basic reasons. That's not a musical vocation. That's how you become Mussolini."
Costello told us that for him writing an autobiography has nothing to do with gossip or evening any old scores: "I'm not gonna tell anybody anything. If it's disgruntled, bitter, ex-band members or people who've known you at some time in your life telling tales, that's between them and their conscience. But it's not something I'm gonna join in with. I am gonna write a book, but I think the things of value that I feel that have happened to me have to be described in a way that's more creative than that, and less self-serving."
On September 17th, Elvis Costello releases his latest album, Wake Up Ghost, which marks his first collaboration with the Roots.
