Billy Squier Classic Sampled On New Eminem Single
1980's rocker Billy Squier is back thanks to rapper Eminem sampling his classic 1981 tune "The Stroke" on his new track "Berzerk," which is the lead single from his upcoming album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2. Ultimate Classic Rock posted that the rapper's use of "The Stroke" is hardly the first time the Squier favorite has been sampled, reporting, ". . . the song's grinding chords and stomping beat that have made it a perennial favorite on rock radio have also helped turn it into a building block for rap tracks like Grandwizzard Johnny'O and the Mighty Sorcerer Crew's 'When It Breaks' and Mickey Avalon's 'Stroke Me,' as well as 'Friday Night' by mash-up artist Girl Talk. 'The Big Beat,' from Squier's 1980 solo debut, The Tale Of The Tape, is one of the most-sampled songs in history."
Billy Squier, who in recent years has as toured as part of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band, says that at this point in his life he's much more laid back about the music he makes and the business in general, and keeps his performing and recording at a very manageable pace these days: "I'm kind of taking things as they come, y'know? I've gotten to a point where instead of trying to create opportunities, I kind of wait for opportunities to present themselves. I find, I find that if someone comes to me, if someone's interested in, in me, then that's usually a project I can get involved in. I've got my eyes open, but I want to do something that's, y'know, that I want to do that other people want me to do, as well -- then everybody's happy."
Billy Squier will next perform on October 6th in Worcester, Massachusetts at the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Fund Raiser at Mechanic's Hall.
