The ashes of the late Richie Havens were scattered across the site of Woodstock in upstate New York during a ceremony held on Sunday (August 18th). About 30 family members and close friends were in attendance as a plane flew over what is now Bethel Woods Center for the Arts while the ashes were scattered over the land per Havens' request. The AP reports that about 1,000 mourners also observed the memorial service.
Havens was the first act to perform at Woodstock in 1969.
His family issued a statement saying, "Though he traveled throughout the world for decades visiting and returning to countless locations, Max Yasgur's field in the Town of Bethel, Sullivan County, New York always remained the location where Richie felt his deepest connection."
Danny Glover and Louis Gossett Jr. were among the speakers at the ceremony.
Havens' memorial service coincided with the 44th anniversary of the final day of Woodstock.
He died of a heart attack back in April at the age of 72.
