Bruce Springsteen Announces 2014 Australian Dates
As expected, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band have announced the first seven dates of their 2014 tour, once again hitting Australia and New Zealand. The band kicks off the Down Under trek on February 7th in Perth, Australia and wraps things up on March 1st in Auckland, New Zealand. Along the way, "The Boss" and the band will make Australian stops in Hindmarsh, Melbourne, Sydney, Pokolbin, and Boondall.
In the tour announcement, longtime Springsteen manager Jon Landau said, "Our shows in Australia earlier this year were among the very best and most satisfying of our whole 128 show tour. The crowds were tremendous, the fans as warm, friendly, and welcoming as we could ever hope for, and the quality of the performances, as virtually every reviewer commented, were spectacularly high."
He went on to say: "From the moment we finished the second show at Hanging Rock on March 31st, we have been working on a plan to return next year. Among other things, we wanted to expand the number of places we play to include the Hunter Valley, Perth and Adelaide, with a trip to Auckland, as well. Those venues are in addition to the new dates in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. In other words, this will be our most far reaching tour of Australasia ever -- and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are planning to make it their finest."
Bruce Springsteen says that the shape of the show is constantly evolving in his mind throughout the tour: "It's always a work in-progress. So I'm laying in bed and I'm going, 'Okay, the other 35 nights, what did I play after 'The Promised Land? Well, what can I do in Belgium that's gonna be different tonight (laughs)?' So, on any given night, I know that these five songs work after this song and still keeps the narrative of what we're talking about intact."
Drummer Max Weinberg has been part of the E Street Band since 1974 and has seen Springsteen transform from an East Coast cult artist into a superstar before his eyes: "Well, I should say I've seen him become more intense than ever. And as a person, well, I think all of us have changed. You can't help but be changed by the Born In The U.S.A. tour, for example. The widespread acceptance of that record and that tour. Y'know, it was a struggle. For Bruce it was a 20-year struggle. I guess I could characterize him as, when you look at Bruce, you see a guy with a lot of piece of mind."
