'CBGB' Soundtrack To Feature Blondie, Talking Heads, The Stooges, And The Police
The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to the film CBGB will be released on October 8th, via Omnivore Records. That same day, a deluxe digital version will be released digitally through Rhino, with a pink, double vinyl version also being issued. The collection features classic tracks by Talking Heads, the Police, the Stooges, the Velvet Underground, Television, MC5, Joey Ramone, as well as Blondie's 2013 remake of its 1978 classic, "Sunday Girl."
Blondie co-founder and keyboardist Jimmy Destri told us that for the most part, the bands stuck together in the Downtown scene -- especially Blondie and the Ramones: "We were all living downtown -- we were all living, like I said, in a four-square-block radius. I mean, well, not me, but if Gary (Valentine) blew a bass amp, we'd go over and borrow Dee Dee (Ramones'), y'know? It was that kind of thing. We'd all borrow each other's equipment -- Clem (Burke's) drums would be set up for Tommy (Ramone) (laughs) and vice-versa, so we wouldn't have to change the drum set if we had to play together. So, we did all that together. It w as a very community oriented thing."
Talking Heads leader David Byrne recalled that initially, the band hated being lumped in such bands as the Ramones and Television and resented being promoted as being part of any type of "scene": "We found it really annoying. In retrospect, I think it was just fine and we were really lucky, but at the time, we were losing our breath saying, 'No, we're not punks! Look -- we don't wear leather jackets or torn jeans, or we're not, like, on stage snarling.' In retrospect, of course, it did us a world of good."
