Don Henley Says Solo Work And Group Projects Balance Him Out
The Eagles will be wrapping up the first leg of their 40th anniversary tour today (Thursday, July 25th) in Bethel, New York. The tour is slated to resume on September 6th in Seattle but group's founding member Don Henley recently took some time to reflect on his past experiences and how he was able to develop his writing by collaboration with Glenn Frey.
He told Cleveland's Plain Dealer, "When I was initially getting to know Glenn, I was impressed with his bravado. He was very interested in songwriting and he was not afraid to just pick up a guitar and start singing something . . . you know, just sailing his ideas out there, even if they weren't fully formed. I had also begun to write original material, but I was somewhat introverted and lacked the experience and the confidence to put it out there. I think I knew, intuitively, that I still had a lot to learn."
He added, "But, Glenn and I encouraged one another, balanced one another, and we both got better at songwriting. Glenn brought a great sense of musicality, a gift for melody and arrangement. I was an English major in college, so I brought all I had learned about literature and poetry. But sometimes our roles were interchangeable because our aptitudes overlapped."
Henley previous shared that those overlapping aptitudes resulted in a unique recording process which often took several go rounds. He explained: "I have what I call the pancake theory. The first pancakes off the griddle are not very good. You usually have to throw them away because they're all kind of bubbly and burnt around the edges. So, the songs are sort of the same, you know. The first ones that we come up with might not be consumable. So, we're gonna keep doing it."
During his interview with the Plain Dealer, Henley was also asked about the group's line-up changes and the exits of Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. He explained, "Their legacy is the musicianship and the material that they brought to the band, and, of course, the vocals, both lead and harmony. The fact that we all grew in different directions and took divergent paths doesn't diminish their contributions at all. We're thrilled to have Bernie joining us on this tour. We'd love to have Randy with us, too but, sadly, his health will not permit."
Henley was also asked about the differences between his solo career and the work with the Eagles. He said, "I don't really have a preference. In my solo career, I like being the boss and in my Eagles career I enjoy not being the boss. It's a nice yin-yang sort of existence. I'm grateful that I get to bounce back and forth between those two careers. It keeps things from getting stale."
