Bon Jovi Donates $1 Million To Hurricane Relief
Jon Bon Jovi returned to his hometown of Sayreville, New Jersey on Monday (July 8th) with a $1 million donation from Bon Jovi to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund, according to USA Today. Sayreville has braved several brutal floods in recent years in addition to damage caused by Sandy. Bon Jovi, who stood with Gov. Chris Christie and first lady Mary Pat Christie, told the several hundred locals who showed up, "My being here is not political, it's emotional because I grew up here. I know that this million dollars sounds like a lot, but it is really just a drop in the bucket and I know there are people still suffering. But what I like to call the power of we coming together -- that means you, me, us -- we are taking a step today to rebuild lives."

Bon Jovi, who after the storm immediately returned to Sayreville to help the devastated town, told the crowd yesterday: "It is pretty cool to stand in front of borough hall 51 years later. I have to tell you that returning here is humbling."

The Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund is chaired by Mary Pat Christie, with such fellow New Jerseyans as Bruce Springsteen and Kelly Ripa, serving as "honorary advisory board members to the charity." To date, the relief fund has raised $38 million in donations, with $10.5 million having been donated since April 30th.

Jon Bon Jovi, has long showed his charitable side in his home state, having opened the JBJ Soul Kitchen in Red Bank, New Jersey, where "customers pay the minimum donation or volunteer in some way to earn a voucher for a meal." Bon Jovi told us that he's more interested in using his career to serve local and global communities than to bolster his ego and bankbook: "Building a medical clinic, which I did in my hometown, becoming involved in the team to build playgrounds at foster homes and put beds in Covenant Houses and stuff like that, giving money to disaster relief, just giving back. . . That's the kind of stuff that's inspiring me now. It's not about, 'Hey man, we got a new record out. This is a rock band!' Yech!"
