Wednesday, June 19, 2013
Singer-songwriter and painter Joni Mitchell is being honored this week in Toronto. On Sunday, June 16th, Mitchell sat for an interview with New York Times music critic Jon Pareles as part of Luminato festival's TimesTalks. During the 90 minute interview, Mitchell said, "Music, like my life, didn't want to stay in one key . . . My songs don't adhere to one emotion. They're more like Fiddler on the Roof . . . "

On Tuesday, June 18th, and Wednesday, June 19th, Mitchell will be honored for her creativity and her upcoming 70th birthday in November. The event is being billed as Joni: A Portrait in Song - A Birthday Happening Live and will feature performances by Kathleen Edwards, Herbie Hancock, Glen Hansard, Esperanza Spalding, Cold Specks, Liam Titcomb, Rufus Wainwright and Lizz Wright.
During the event, Mitchell will be reading a new poem based on a passage from Emily Carr's 1966 book, Hundreds and Thousands. Mitchell explained, "A page and a little bit are the basis of this thing that I wrote in empathy of her."
