Quick Takes On Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, And Elvis Costello
Bon Jovi has just announced 14 new North American tour dates for this summer and fall. Vintage Vinyl News reported that Bon Jovi gave up their fee for their June 27th concert in Madrid, Spain so that their fans could afford to be able to see the band in the midst of a particularly rough financial climate. Jon Bon Jovi told the Spanish paper, El Mundo, that originally Spain wasn't on the tour itinerary: "We did a study and we saw that due to the economic situation Spain wasn't going to be on the roadmap. But I didn't want to leave out fans from a country I love that has treated me well for 30 years."

Billy Joel drew upon his high school years in Levittown, New York for his 1977 classic from The Stranger, "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant," and explained the song's genesis during his appearance on Inside The Actors Studio: "That song started out, the middle part was called 'The Ballad Of Brenda And Eddie.' The thing I was trying to get across, and I'm sure we all know, there were people who peaked a little too early in life. When we were in high school, there were the people we thought were so cool -- I thought, 'Man, I wish I was that guy!' With a perfect pompadour, he always had great clothes, he always had the coolest shoes, he always went out with the coolest girl. And then I saw him at the 10 year reunion, and this guy was like a caved-in ashtray. In high school, it was so important to be with the right crowd -- in my era, maybe it's the same in this era, I'm assuming there's a certain amount of this that still goes on. But they were my heroes, these people. But then I said -- 'that's not enough.'"

Coming on September 17th, is Elvis Costello's first studio team-up with the Roots. The new collection, called, Wise Up Ghost, was co-produced by Costello, Roots drummer Questlove Thompson, and the band's longtime associate, Steven Mandel. The album will be released on the Blue Note imprint. The album is Costello's followup to 2010's Americana-tinged, National Ransom. (USA Today)

Elvis Costello told us that even after all these years, the best songs still seem to come out of thin air: "I think you have to accept the spontaneous element in it that you can't really provide for -- you can't really predict. If you knew when it was going to come up on you, you'd do it all day long. You can church out the hits. But that isn't the way it works. You don't know when you'll be moved to write a song. I mean you can force yourself to write music, but I don't know that it would be the most thrilling stuff."
