Tom Petty Doesn't Want Live Show To Be A 'Jukebox' Of Hits
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are currently out on tour and switching their setlist up from night-to-night. Petty, who has no shortage of hits to pack his shows with, told Rolling Stone that in order to keep things fresh for him and the band, he needs to shy away from the tried-and-true fan favorites at every concert.
Petty explained his reasons for the band's current setlists, saying, "I was feeling that (our show was getting stale). We felt kind of obligated to play all the most popular songs, because people pay so much for tickets. But I want to play some of these other songs, rather just get trapped into what people expect. I've written a lot of good songs that weren't released as singles. I'd rather be known for that then for making lots of hits. . . I could be a jukebox, but I don't want to be. I just feel like we have more to offer."
Tom Petty told us that the Heartbreakers have always been able to bring something new each and every time they gear up for another album or tour: "I think we would all be embarrassed if we weren't getting better -- there's not any reason to keep doing it if we weren't. It seems like, over the years, that every time we get together and plug in and start to play, we've come a little further than we were. And as long as it keeps doing that, I'm interested in it. Y'know, I still really love playing with this band."
