Beatles-Inspired Musical Opening On Broadway In July
In celebration of the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Beatles landing in America, a new multimedia Broadway revival of the "Fab Four's" music will hit Broadway this summer. The Hollywood Reporter posted that the show, titled, Let It Be, will kick off previews at the St. James Theatre on July 16th, with an opening night set for July 24th. The show, which includes 40 Beatles tunes, features, "state-of-the-art projection technology and 3D sound to put audiences at the heart of the Beatles' meteoric rise from their humble beginnings in Liverpool's Cavern Club, through the heights of Beatlemania." Let It Be is slated to run through December 29th. The show is currently running on London's West End to mixed reviews.
Let It Be isn't the first stab at recreating the Beatles on the "Great White Way"; Rain -- an offshoot of Beatlemania -- recently ran on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre for 300 shows between October 2010 and July 2011. Beatlemania ran from 1977 to 1979 at the Winter Garden Theatre for a total of 920 performances.
Paul McCartney says that like the rest of us, he's still astonished at the legacy the Beatles have left behind: "Y'know, I'm very proud of everything we did with the Beatles, uh . . . In truth, looking back, I kinda can't believe it, 'cause we were just working each day, year-in, year-out, making records. Now that it's over -- the Beatles is a body of work now. So I can look back on it now dispassionately and just judge it for what it is, and I think it's fine. I'm kind of amazed we did it."
