The past 12 months have definitely been a treasure trove for Beach Boys fans -- with a new studio album, a couple of new live DVD's, and two new albums set for the next few months. The industry release sheet Musictap.net posted that on May 21st, the band will issue its sixth live collection, Live - The 50th Anniversary Tour -- with the band's long-awaited deep cut box set Made In California set for August 27th.
The group's official archivist Alan Boyd, who co-produced the Grammy Award winning box set The Smile Sessions, with engineer Mark Linett, who's revamped the band's catalogue for over 20 years, says that the duo is always looking for a way to bring the Beach Boys' musical vision up to 21st century standards: "There's been this ongoing process for the last several years of identifying, preserving, and cataloging all the tapes in the Beach Boys archive. But as we've been going through the years and digitally preserving these things on the high resolution Pro-Tools format, we've been able to identify which previously (issued) mono tracks have enough elements for a stereo remix. And so every time Capitol (Records) comes up with another concept that they want for a summertime compilation album -- when they have a concept, the first thing we think about is 'Okay, what do we have in the vaults that would work for a new presentation like this?"
