The Rolling Stones Announce 2013 Tour Dates, Starting In LA
The Rolling Stones have announced the initial dates for their 2013 50 & Counting tour. The band -- Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and Ron Wood -- so far have nine North American stops on their itinerary in addition to their two UK festival appearances at Glastonbury and Hyde Park. The Stones, who will once again feature former guitarist Mick Taylor as their special guest, will kick off the trek in early May at L.A.'s Staples Center -- with the actual date still TBA due to pending NBA and NHL playoff schedules. Throughout May and June the band will hit Oakland, San Jose, and Anaheim, California; Las Vegas; Toronto; Chicago; Boston and Philadelphia. More shows will be announced.

Mick Jagger said in a statement announcing the tour: "50 & Counting has been pretty amazing so far. We did a few shows in London and New York last year. . . and had such a good time that we thought. . . let's do some more. It's a good show. Lots of the classic stuff everyone wants to hear . . . with a few little gems tucked in here and there. The stage is shaped like lips and goes off into the venue so I get to run around in the crowd. It's great fun to be able to get that close to the audience."

Keith Richards added: "From day one at rehearsals it sounded so fresh. You could tell that everybody was dying to get their teeth into it. It was like. . . open the gates...let us out! Cause man, it is the life and blood of us to play in front of people."

Mick Jagger told us that whether they're playing a sweaty, smoky club or a 60,000 seat stadium -- about a third of the Stones' setlist has to be devoted to their legendary hits: "I figure there's about 10 songs that if you don't play them, people are gonna say, 'I wish they'd a played. . .' So, y'know, they're paying, y'know, good money to come and see you, and I don't see why you should disappoint them, just being difficult, 'I don't wanna play "Brown Sugar."' I mean, because they probably wanna hear it. I quite enjoy playing 'Brown Sugar,' but sometimes you don't want to. But anyway, there's about 10 of those."

When we caught up with Mick Taylor during his run with the band in December, he could sense that the band was starting to get limbered up for the road: "I think, uh, the Stones have always done things their own way and they will always continue to do things their own way. It's more than just nostalgia, it's, I think they just feel re-energized, possibly very enthusiastic about doing things in the future."
