Carole King Musical Coming To Broadway
Carole King's life and career will be the latest rock n' roll story to find it's way to Broadway, according to Vintage Vinyl News. The new play, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, will open in the spring of 2014, but a pre-Broadway run is in the works for the end of this year. The music will be based on King's catalogue; including both her solo work and her legendary '60s pop classics written with her first husband Gerry Goffin. Songs by Goffin & King's close friends -- and chief Brill Building competitors -- Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil will also be featured. The show's book was written by Douglas McGrath -- who received and Oscar nomination for co-writing Woody Allen's 1994 movie Bullets Over Broadway.

King released a statement about the show, explaining: "What's so great about this for me is that musicals were a major influence on my songwriting. In fact, when Gerry and I first met, we made a bargain that I would write music for the Broadway show he wanted to write if he wrote lyrics for my rock n' roll songs. The songs took off, and the show idea never came to fruition. Now that our songs have merged with a Broadway show, we've come full circle."

Carole King's early-'70s singer-songwriter heyday will always be tied to her work with James Taylor. She addressed the fact that people are always curious about two performers of the opposite sex collaborating in a tight knit fashion: "First of all, you can ask me about James any time, because I lobe him (laughs) so much. It's that real . . . y'know everybody says, 'Were you a couple? -- No. Y'know, 'Do you ever think about it?' -- No. The first connection was musical."
