Lenny Kravitz Replaced In Marvin Gaye Biopic
Lenny Kravitz has been replaced in the starring role of the upcoming Marvin Gaye biopic. Dateline Hollywood reported that the movie, titled, Sexual Healing, is back in pre-production and will now star the picture's original leading man, Law & Order star Jesse L. Martin. Martin, who was an original cast member of the Broadway musical Rent before going on to star in the movie version, currently appears on NBC's Smash. There's been no start date announced for the film.
In addition to new producers, well known music director Julien Temple has signed on to direct Sexual Healing. Among Temple's best known works are the Sex Pistols' The Great Rock And Roll Swindle, The Secret Policeman's Other Ball concert film, Absolute Beginners starring David Bowie, and Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten.
Sexual Healing, which along with several other Gaye films, has been in the works for several years, and deals with Gaye's last years -- 1981 to 1984. It chronicles Gaye's descent into drug addiction and his move to Belgium for the recording of his first album for Columbia, 1982's Midnight Love, which featured his Top Three classic, "Sexual Healing."
Marvin Gaye's close friend, Supremes co-founder Mary Wilson told us that there was far more light in Gaye's life than the public knew about. She went on to reveal that, unbeknownst to the public at large -- while at the peak of his '60s career at Motown -- Gaye was willing to leave his singing career behind to become an professional athlete: "He also wanted to play football. And so he bulked himself up, I forgot what year, it's maybe 1967, 1968 something like (that). Bulked himself up like a football player. I think he actually did try out for the Lions, I think they were. So he had this other side of him that the public didn't know about."
