Quick Takes on Iron Butterfly, ZZ Top, Pink Floyd and Kansas
Iron Butterfly bassist Lee Dorman died of a suspected heart attack on December 21st at age 70. Dorman played on the band's 1968 album, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, 1969's Ball, and the band's two 1970 albums, Live and Metamorphosis. Barring a few hiatuses, following their split in 1977, Dorman remained a principal in the band's ongoing career. (Vintage Vinyl News)

ZZ Top guitarist Billy F. Gibbons will reunite with his psychedelic early band, the Moving Sidewalks, for a single New York City show. The Houston band's original lineup -- Gibbons, bassist Don Summers, drummer Dan Mitchell, and keyboardist Tom Moore -- will perform in the heart of Times Square on March 30th at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill. The band, who released one album, 1968's Flash, made a local name for themselves opening for such major acts as Jimi Hendrix and the Doors, among others. The upcoming show is a tie-in for their new compilation, called, Moving Sidewalks: The Complete Collection. (Gibson.com)

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason came to the rescue of his childhood music store, Foote's, by purchasing the shop rather than see it go under. Mason bought his first drum kit at the London store back in 1958 for about $12, and started up his first band, the Hot Rods. Foote's sales director Rob Foote will continue to manage the shop, and told mi-pro-co.uk, "At the eleventh hour, our business loan was turned down by our bank. It was a major blow to our plans, but Nick came to our rescue. Without him, and our collective of generous investors, Foote's would be no more." (Noise 11)
