Quick Takes on Elton John, 2012 Stand Up For Heroes Benefit, And Jackson Brown
Reports out of England say that Elton John and longtime partner David Furnish are expecting their second child in the coming months. The couple has a nearly two-year-old son, Zachary, and is reportedly interviewing candidates for a baby nanny for the couple's estate in Old Windsor, Berkshire. An unnamed source close to Elton revealed that the couple will be using the same surrogate who gave birth to Zachary in 2010 and was recruited via the Centre For Surrogate Parenting in Encino, California: "Elton and David love this lady like a sister and they feel indebted to her for life. Naturally she has been well rewarded. But her identity will never be revealed." The unnamed surrogate is said to be "several months" pregnant. (The Sun)
On Thursday night (November 8th) Bruce Springsteen, Roger Waters, and John Mayer headlined the 2012 Stand Up For Heroes benefit at Manhattan's Beacon Theatre. Springsteen performed a four-song set -- "We Take Care of Our Own," "Working On The Highway," "Tougher Than The Rest" with Patti Scialfa, and "Land Of Hope And Dreams." "The Boss" then took part in an auction for one of his acoustic guitars and played a bit of the Elvis Presley standard, "Mystery Train" with posting, "(Springsteen added) perks as bidding escalated -- throwing in his harmonica, a 'personal tour of the backstage area,' and an autograph -- to finally bring in $110,000 for the cause."
Roger Waters performed a particularly heart-wrenching set featuring Levon Helm's "Wide River To Cross," Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door," and his own Pink Floyd classic "Wish You Were Here" with 15 disabled guitarists and vocalists he had met while jamming with the veterans at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Since 2008, the annual Stand Up For Heroes benefit serves the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which provides aid to those who have sustained the "hidden injuries of war," and has helped over "one million veterans, service members, and their families since it began in 2008."
Among the comedians appearing at the benefit were Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais, Patton Oswalt, and Jon Stewart.
