Steve Zan Zandt Says It Took Him 20 Years To Get Into The Beach Boys
Steve Van Zandt is a connoisseur off all things rock n' roll, but admits that it took him two decades to finally become a Beach Boys fan. Van Zandt, who's currently on the road with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, and hosts his own syndicated radio show, Little Steven's Underground Garage, told us that while growing up in his New Jersey neighborhood, the Beach Boys music was just too clean and slick too for his ears.
We asked Van Zandt when he finally got hip to the Beach Boys: "Possibly as late as the '80s, or so. All of a sudden just I listened to them one day and kinda got it, y'know? See -- this is what happens; when you're growing up, you are what you like, okay? So, you're building an identity. Once you are who you are, I think you relax a bit about that stuff and can see things much more objectively -- and that's what happened to me. Y'know, I didn't have to relate to the Beach Boys anymore, or what they were wearing, to be able to like them."
