James Taylor Staying Off The Road To Write New Album
James Taylor is taking 2013 off to write his first new original album since 2002's October Road. Taylor told Massachusetts' Berkshire Eagle that writing and recording is taking precedence over his roadwork next year, explaining, "I'm taking the year off, I'm not touring, I'm trying to write an album."
When asked if that means he would be skipping his annual appearance at the Tanglewood music festival, Taylor admitted: "It's difficult to play Tanglewood without booking at least a month of work, because I can't pull my band together for one gig and have them miss out on other work. These guys need to fill their schedules if they can. We're still talking about whether or not there's something I can do at Tanglewood. But I've told my band we're not going to do a big tour, it's going to wait until I've made the new album."
Taylor went on to say, "It's hard to take the year off, there are a lot of very compelling things that come up and it's amazing how the entire calendar fills up. For three years in a row, I've intended to take the fall off. I have to get really serious about it, and yet offers come along from old friends and things I'd love to do, and also the opportunity to work and bring home a paycheck. It's very hard to turn work down."
James Taylor was one of the driving forces behind the early '70s singer-songwriter era and admits that's he's still comfortable writing about his life: "That's the kind of work I do. I mean, sometimes, I've felt, y'know, that I wish I wasn't so, uh, sort of personal or confessional. But that just seems to be the kind of stuff I write."
