Some Quick Takes on Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Deep Purple And Thin Lizzy
Tom Petty's eBay auction for his 1996 Jaguar XJS Convertible is now running, with all proceeds going to benefit Doctors Without Borders. Petty explained in the auction's press release, "I have so many great memories associated with this car. When I began dating Dana (my wife) I asked her what her favorite car was. So, I phoned the office and said I wanted a Champagne convertible Jaguar XJS. The next day they delivered it to my house and showed me how everything worked and I took it for a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway. I was in heaven, as was Dana. This car has such and incredible design. My favorite car I ever owned. We sure are going to miss it."
The auction wraps on Sunday, October 21st at 2 p.m. PDT.
Doctors Without Border is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971. It provides "independent, impartial assistance in more than 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters."

Add Deep Purple co-founder Ritchie Blackmore to the list of rockers who have no interest in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The guitarist, who left Deep Purple for the final time back in 1993 and now performs with girlfriend Candice Night in the folk duo, Blackmore's Night, said of the Rock Hall: "Personally, I couldn't care less. I would never go. I'm not really a fan of that stuff. Considering some of the people that are in the Hall of Fame, I'm not sure if it's a good idea, so I don't care one way or the other, actually.. . . I think our fans seem to care more than I do. They're always saying, 'You should be in the Hall of Fame. You should be in this, you should be in that. . .' If I can pay the bills, that's all I care about." (Billboard)
Thin Lizzy leader and guitarist Scott Gorham announced via the band's Facebook page that they are scrapping plans for a new album under the Thin Lizzy name, claiming that they group is doing so in respect to founder Phil Lynott, who died in 1986 -- and despite the fact that they've been touring with various lineups since 1996. Gorham posted: "Out of respect to Phil Lynott and the legacy he created, we have decided that we should not release a new album under the Thin Lizzy name. It was a very difficult decision as we put a lot of time and effort into re-building the Thin Lizzy brand over recent years. . . Releasing a new album was the only way to continue this success. We all know how much Phil meant to this band and the fans. We will release this material soon and you will be hearing some great new music with the classic Thin Lizzy sound intact. We will announce future plans early in the New Year."
