Bruce Springsteen Back In The USA
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band opened their North American summer dates last night (August 14th) with the first of two shows at Boston's Fenway Park. The three-hour-and-30-minute show was light on rarities -- as is often the case during the first night of a two night stand -- but Springsteen did manage to surprise and delight with spot on renditions of The River torch song "Drive All Night," Nebraska's "Johnny 99," and covers of John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" -- which was a crowd request -- and the Standells' mid-'60s classic, "Dirty Water."
Bruce Springsteen says that the shape of the show is constantly evolving in his mind throughout the tour: "It's always a work in-progress. So I'm laying in bed and I'm going, 'Okay, the other 35 nights, what did I play after 'The Promised Land? Well, what can I do in Belgium that's gonna be different tonight (laughs)?' So, on any given night, I know that these five songs work after this song and still keeps the narrative of what we're talking about intact."
Nils Lofgren admits that he loves any setlist shakeups, but reminded us that the fan requests hardly throw the E Street Band veterans: "I think all of us have got 40 years in now. We started in bar bands -- it was a time with no video, no choreography, no nothing. You had to learn how to play in front of people. Basically in the '60s, y'know, in cover bands we all cut our teeth on incredible wealths of catalogues, like Motown, Stax/Volt, British Invasion, blues."
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band perform again tonight (August 15th) at Fenway.
