Paul McCartney Jams At Apollo Theater Fundraiser
Paul McCartney took the stage on Saturday night (August 11th) at Ronald Perelman's East Hampton, New York estate in front of 250 guests at the business magnate's third annual fundraiser for Harlem's Apollo Theater, according to Bloomberg.com. McCartney, who helped raise $2 million for the historic venue, joined the Isley Brothers' Ron and Ernie Isley on stage to perform their hit, and the Beatles' legendary cover, "Twist And Shout" -- marking the second time that McCartney has performed the song this summer, following his Hyde Park team-up with Bruce Springsteen in London. Prior to this summer, the last time McCartney performed "Twist And Shout" in concert was on August 31st, 1965 when the Beatles wrapped their second North American tour in Daly City, California's Cow Palace.

During his performance, McCartney talked about how important the Apollo was for the Beatles, saying, "Where would we have been without you? In Liverpool, we would have stayed there." Among the other performers were Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, who performed "Wanted Dead Or Alive," Pharrell Williams, and Jennifer Hudson.

McCartney explained that at this stage of his career, how he's perceived as an artist is pretty much irrelevant to him or his work: "I'm not really fussed about what I am now. Y'know, 'cause I've been a lot of stuff I wanted to be. So, y'know, if I was ever trying to become a title -- 'a rock and roller' -- well, y'know, I don't think of myself as anything in particular. Y'know, obviously, as you get older it gets harder to be a punk. But I'm not really fussed about that, 'cause I think it'd be, like, daft to suddenly really try to be 15-years-old. So I have to accept to a degree what I am, y'know? I think of myself, basically, as a sort of rocker, who can write ballads as well."
