Paul McCartney To Perform at $10,000 Ticket Motown Fundraiser
Paul McCartney and Motown founder Berry Gordy, Jr. will be the guests of honor on September 18th, at Manhattan's Steinway Hall in celebration of the restoration of Motown's legendary studio piano. The 100-seat, $10,000-per-ticket fundraiser will benefit the Motown Museum, and feature both McCartney and Gordy performing on the piano.

Billboard reported that the 1877 piano that sat broken in Motown's Hitsville U.S.A. Studio A in Detroit after years of use at the label's Studio B, is at last repaired and ready to be played. After visiting the Motown museum on July 24th, 2011, McCartney saw the state of the piano and vowed to have it repaired at his complete expense. The piano began its train journey on October 31st from Detroit to Steinway & Sons' New York headquarters for a complete restoration, with the old, replaced parts preserved for exhibition at the museum.

At the time, McCartney talked about the piano in a statement, saying, "When I visited the Motown Museum, I remembered listening to records as a kid in Liverpool, learning the songs 'You Really Got A Hold On Me' and 'Money.' I said to myself, 'Wow! This is the Holy Grail!'"

Robin Terry, the granddaughter of the late museum founder Esther Gordy Edwards and chairperson of the museum board of trustees, hopes "to use the piano in our education programming and really inspire other talented people in the Detroit area community who are aspiring to be musicians, performing artists and the like."

Terry went on to say: "One of the things Paul said is he wanted to see this project through from beginning to end. We thought this was an appropriate way of doing it, unveiling the piano and inviting both Paul and Mr. Gordy to be the first to sort of put their DNA on it, if you will."
