Some Quick Takes on Tom Petty, Peter Townsend, 'Mick Jagger' Book And Journey
Tom Petty admits that it was an emotional moment last week when at the Democratic Nation Convention, President Obama walked out to his 1989 classic, "I Won't Back Down" after President Clinton's speech. Petty explained: "I got chills. They knew it would be okay. I've had a chance to meet the President and talk to him about the music he listens to. . . I've been on the wrong side where I've had to tell some candidates to stop using my music." On Thursday (September 6th) Petty escorted his daughter Adria Petty to the MTV VMA's where she was nominated as a director for four videos by Coldplay, Rhianna, and Regina Spektor, respectively. Pete Townshend told us that Adria -- a friend of his daughter Emma -- was in the running to design the Who's conceptual videos that were such an integral part of the band's last major tour: "We were going to use Adria Petty to do some work on the Who's stage videos. It didn't happen in the end, but I really like her animation style. She uses cut outs and props and models and things in her videos. And (it's a) very interesting style."

Noted rock biographer Phillip Norman's latest book, titled, simply, Mick Jagger, will be published on October 2nd. The 640-page tome sheds new light on Jagger's marriages, children, and his 50 years serving as frontman for the Rolling Stones. The book pulls no punches in dealing with his various infidelities to his lovers and wives over the years, and chronicles the successful legal battle by one-time girlfriend Marsha Hunt to get Jagger to financially and legally recognize their daughter, Karis, as his child.

Phillip Norman is best known for his previous groundbreaking biographies on the Beatles, John Lennon, Elton John, the Rolling Stones, and Buddy Holly.

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry will appear on the September 19th episode of the Discovery Channel series Sons Of Guns. In the segment, which airs at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, the show's team of gunsmiths will be hired to restore and repair an antique, black powder Lyle cannon that belongs to Perry. The guitarist and his family turn up at the shop to pick up their cannon and are treated to some Southern hospitality from the Red Jacket Firearms crew, with Perry eventually even sinking a boat with his newly restored weapon. Guns N' Roses will perform at Neil Young's 26th annual Bridge School Benefit Concerts, scheduled for October 20th and 21st at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. Also scheduled to appear are Young and his band Crazy Horse, Jack White, Foster The People, the Flaming Lips, Sarah McLachlan, Lucinda Williams, Steve Martin, K.D. Lang and Gary Clark Jr.

The Bridge School, co-founded by Young's wife Pegi, works to help people with physical and speech impairments through alternate methods of communication, including music therapy. Each year, Young, who has two handicapped sons, gathers a cross-section of performers to perform acoustically to benefit the school. Tickets, priced from $35 to $150, go on sale on Friday (September 14th) at 10 a.m. through LiveNation.com, by calling (800) 745-3000 and at the Shoreline Amphitheatre box office. (Blabbermouth)

Journey co-founder and keyboardist Gregg Rolie says he's all up for a reunion with the band. Rolie, who co-founded Santana and split the group to form Journey with bandmate Neal Schon in 1973, quit Journey in 1980 just before they wrote and recorded their 1981 multi-platinum blockbuster, Escape. Rolie, who just wrapped up a summer stint as part of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band, was asked if after all these years, he'd be up for playing with his former bandmates: "I would do that! It's just a matter of doing it, and the timing. . . The ball's in their court. But it's not on the front burner right now." (CBS Local)
