Paul Simon, Sting, Stevie Wonder, And James Taylor Set For NYC Benefit
Paul Simon, Sting, Stevie Wonder, and James Taylor will headline the October 4th concert at Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall to benefit the Children's Health Fund. Broadway World reported that the fundraiser celebrates the 25th anniversary of the charity, which Simon started with pediatrician Irwin Redlener, MD. Since 1986, "Children's Health Fund has expanded nationwide to become the primary source of medical care for thousands of homeless and low-income families and now has 25 programs operating in 17 states and Washington, D.C."
Also set to appear at the event are Paul Simon's wife, Edie Brickell, Sting's wife Trudie Styler, Tina Fey, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Steve Martin, and Ruben Blades. Simon Fuller will be honored with the Fund's Founder's Award. Tickets run between $125 and $1,000.
Paul Simon, who's no stranger to playing both to arenas and massive festival crowds, explained that ultimately, performing in theaters is a preferable way to connect his music with his audience: "If I am standing here and singing with the band behind me, and this is how close I am to the audience, I am going to have visual contact with the audience and there's going to be a feeling of interaction. But if the audience is 40 feet back and they can see me on a screen over here, it's harder to actually have a real feeling of interaction, because of the physical separation."
