Brian Wilson is recovering from back surgery and took time out to post on his Tumblr page (brianwilsonlive.tumblr.com) a message to his well-wishers. Fans have been concerned with Wilson's recent weight gain, which has been due to persistent back pain that has pretty much eliminated his five-mile-a-day exercise regime.
Wilson's Tumblr post reads:
Hi all, I've been reading the posts where some of you are concerned about my health in general. I want to let you know that before the Beach Boys' 50th tour started I was having some lower back issues right around the time we performed on the Grammys in February. This is the same type of problem that (my brother) Carl (Wilson) used to suffer from, it's hereditary. But being able to tour with the Boys again meant so much to me that I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Luckily, I was able to get this new cutting edge procedure that totally worked. But after this last run in Australia it came back and I had the procedure redone this week.
I feel so much better already and can't wait to get back to my second home, London!! See you soon. Love & Mercy, Brian Wilson
Although his battles with substance abuse and mental illness are the stuff of legend; these days, the only drugs Wilson ingests are psychotropic medications to counter-balance his auditory hallucinations. We asked him if his ongoing mental and emotional problems are easier to handle while performing: "The opposite. Quite the opposite. I feel like I'm overworking. I'm trying to sing and I hear auditory hallucinations in my head at the same time, which is a tough one, but I can do it. Every concert is like a ringer."
Brian Wilson, who is the lone survivor of his immediate family -- including his younger brothers and bandmates Carl and Dennis Wilson -- carries the weight of the Wilson's musical legacy on his shoulders. We asked him, if knowing what he knows now about life, what he would've said to the 24-year-old kid recording Smile: "I woulda said, 'Don't take any more drugs!' I would say, 'Stop taking drugs!' -- if I was able to talk to myself when I was 24, but I can't."
The Beach Boys wrap their 50th anniversary tour over two nights in London this month -- September 27th at the Royal Albert Hall, and September 28th at Wembley Arena.
