Mike Love To Resume Beach Boys Leadership As Sole Founding Member
Tonight's performance (September 18th) at L.A.'s Grammy Museum might be the original Beach Boys' final North American date -- forever. Although there are still two UK concerts set for later this month, along with several promo appearances while in England, Mike Love's substitute touring band with Bruce Johnston will resume full time next month.
His publicist issued a statement reading in part: "The post 50th anniversary configuration will not include Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks. The 50th Reunion Tour was designed to be a set tour with a beginning and an end to mark a special 50-year milestone for the band. . . The Beach Boys . . . (will be) supported musically and vocally by Christian Love, Randell Kirsch, Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill, and Scott Totten, who serves as musical director. It is in this configuration that the Beach Boys have been bringing the legacy of their music and the American lifestyle, with which they have become synonymous, since 1998 when Carl Wilson passed. " Love said in the press release: "As we move on, Bruce and I look forward to performing live for Beach Boys fans everywhere."
Mike Love told us that with so many band members coming and going from the group over the past 50 years, even that's become part of the Beach Boys' legacy: "Y'know, the funny thing is about the Beach Boys is it's always changed. I mean, Al Jardine was in the group originally, then he quit to go to school and by the time we had our first record on Capitol Records, which was called 'Surfin' Safari,' there was the first change. And then David Marks went out, Al came back in, Brian left, Glen Campbell came in, Bruce Johnston replaced him. There's always been change in the Beach Boys."
