The Beach Boys Wrap Up Reunion Tour Tonight In London
The Beach Boys will wrap up their 74-date reunion tour tonight (September 28th) in London at the 12,500-seat Wembley Arena. Last night's 61-song show at the Royal Albert Hall was peppered with old favorites and deep cuts -- including such set list rarities as "The Little Girl I Once Knew," "Still Cruisin'," and "Our Prayer" -- the opening a capella cut from the band's legendary Smile album. As a nod to both the end of the tour, and possibly the fact that Mike Love has chosen to not carry on with co-founders Brian Wilson, David Marks, and Al Jardine -- the band closed the show with the world premiere of the melancholy "Summer's Gone," which was co-written with Jon Bon Jovi and serves as the closing track to the band's recent hit comeback album, That's Why God Made The Radio.
Mike Love, who decides the band's setlist from show to show, was pleased to give the die-hard fans the chance during the tour to hear the band stray off the beaten path and dig deep into their '60s and '70s catalogue: "I think there's a lot of fans out there that like it and we like singing those songs; 'Please Let Me Wonder,' 'Kiss Me Baby' -- different songs that are less well known. They're not like the Number One records like 'Help Me, Rhonda' was, or a big hit like 'Surfin' U.S.A.,' or 'Good Vibrations' or 'Kokomo.' They're really special in that they gave unique harmonies, and they're really interesting subjectively for us."
Decades after first laying down their voices on tape, Brian Wilson says he still values the Beach Boys for their contribution to his music throughout the years: "I think the magic is Mike Love's vocal performances on our songs, and Carl (Wilson) and Dennis (Wilson), and Bruce (Johnston) and Al (Jardine) and I should be congratulated for some really good background singing."
