Two longtime Cortland area construction companies are closing their doors,.
The Michael May Construction and Paul Yaman Construction companies are are ceasing operation after decades in the local construction and remodeling industry.
The newsroom spoke to Michael May who said he decided to close down his business last month.
May said after 41 years in business he decided it was time to slow down and is currently in the process of looking at other career options.
May said that while the economic downturn that started in 2008 and is slowly turning around was a factor but not the major force behind his decision to close. One of the issues that May faced and the building industry as a whole faces is a lack of trained and experienced labor. May said more emphasis needs to be placed on younger workers to move into trade industries such as plumbing, electrical and carpentry.
May says without reinvigorating the trade guilds property owners will face higher prices for projects and the wait times for skilled craftsman will increase.
