Another reminder for drivers using Interstate 81 through Cortland County, work is set to resume today on a project to replace the bridges that carry the interstate over Preble Road in the Town of Preble.
Starting today work will resume on the bridge project, last year crews replaced the northbound bridge, now the focus will shift to the southbound bridge.
The work includes replacing the bridge abutments for both the northbound and southbound lanes along with drainage improvements and shoulder work. The existing steel bridges are being replaced with precast concrete bridges. The precast concrete substantially reduces construction time. D-O-T crews installed a crossover to carry traffic during the construction process.
The nearly 50 year old bridges were scheduled to be replaced in 2015, but the northbound bridge was struck in 2012, the damage forced the structure to be replaced sooner.
The new bridges will be wider and will provide more clearance for taller traffic on Preble Road.
The project has a price tag of close to $8 million.
