Inmate Found Dead in Tompkins County Jail
An investigation is underway after an inmate housed in the Tompkins County Jail inmate was found dead in his cell Wednesday morning, police say foul play is not suspected.
The Tompkins County Sheriff's Office says 32 year old Travis Yavits of Ithaca was found dead in his cell Wednesday,  less than a day after he was sent to the facility to serve a a 60-day sentence for a larceny conviction.
Yavits was was found dead in his bunk around 3:30 Wednesday morning by a corrections officer making routine cell inspections.
Police say Yavits’ death does not appear to be suspicious, but his cause of death is under investigation.
The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy providing and tests could take several weeks.
