5 People Charged in Connection With Attempted Robbery on Cortland's South End
Cortland City Police have arrested 5 people in connection with an armed robbery that occurred last night on South Avenue.
Cortland City Police say around 9:40 last night 5 suspects entered a home on South Ave., inside one of the men is accused of displaying a gun and demanded money.
An argument ensued with the victims living there and the suspects then fled.
Cortland City Police used the State Police K-9 unit to track one of the suspects to a wooded area near North Cliffe Road.
The individual has not been identified because he is a juvenile. The teen led police to three others involved in the robbery.
Police have arrested 17 year old Jacob Swanson of 122 Elm Street, 18 year old Edward Widger and 20 year old Francis Shelley both of 15 1/2 Elm Street. All three were charged with a felony count of attempted robbery and a felony charge of burglary.
Shelley was charged with a felony count of weapons possession for brandishing the gun, he was also charged with a misdemeanor charge of menacing.
Early today the fifth suspect 16 year old Brett Copes of 39 Cleveland Street was also arrested and charged with felony counts of burglary and attempted robbery.
Investigators say the suspects did not know the victims and they have not recovered the firearm used in connection with the crime.
All 5 suspects were to be arraigned today in City Court.
