85 Year Old Dryden Man Rescued Following 70ft Fall Into Icy Ravine
An unidentified 85-year-old Dryden man is recovering after falling into a steep ravine behind his home yesterday.
Just before 11:30 Monday the Tompkins County 911 center received a report of a man who had fallen down a ravine behind a home at 19 German Cross Road and was bleeding from the head.
The Slaterville Fire Department along with the Ithaca Fire Department Rope Rescue Team were called to the scene.
When firefighters arrived they found the elderly man about 70 feet down an icy ravine.
Rescuers rigged a rope system at the top of the ravine and sent a firefighter down to team up with firefighters that were tending to the man.
Firefighters then hauled the man up the slippery slope, the man was taken to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries, the rescue took approximately an hour and a half.
Firefighters warn that while working near or hiking on trails, always carry a cell phone and let others know where you will be in case there is an emergency.
