Polar Plunge Raises 17 Thousand For Local United Way

Despite chilly temperatures Saturday over 100 people braved the weather to take a dip in the waters at Yaman Park in support of the United Way of Cortland County.

113 People participated in the 4th annual United Way Polar Bear Challenge Saturday at Yaman Park in Cortland. With water temperatures around 28 degrees several participants said it was one of the coldest polar plunges since the event started.

The event helps raise money to support the United Way's annual fundraising campaign. This year, the Polar Challenge raised nearly $17 thousand dollars.

Local Realtor Steve Cinquanti was the top fundraiser this year bringing in over $36 hundred dollars, a team from the Cortland Child Development Council raised $2 thousand dollars.

State Police divers were on hand to cut holes in the frozen water and make sure participants were safe, the Cortland City Fire Department and TLC Ambulance Service were on hand as well.
