Chobani to Donate Yogurt Banned at Sochi Olympics
Chenango County based Chobani is abandoning its effort to get its high protein Greek yogurt to the Sochi Olympics, the company is now donating the yogurt that was blocked entry into the former Soviet nation .
The company says it will donate about 5,000 cups of yogurt it had hoped to send to U.S. athletes at the Winter Games.
The shipment has been held up in a refrigerated warehouse at Newark Liberty International Airport since Russian authorities said the U.S. Department of Agriculture failed to provide a necessary certificate under its customs rules.
Chobani's chief marketing officer tells The Associated Press that the yogurt will be donated to New York and New Jersey food banks.
Chobani's CEO says he is disappointed that athletes won't be able to get the yogurt, which is held some of the highest food inspection standards in the world.
Chobani is a team USA sponsor.
