Commercial Property and Multi-family Home Owners in Homer to Pay New Trash Fee
Business owners and multi family property owners in the Village of Homer are facing a new charge for trash collection. The village has adopted a new trash collection fee schedule for those properties in an effort to offset increase in trash costs.
Beginning March 1st all commercial properties and multi-family properties with three or more apartment units must pay a separate fee and use a designated trash container if they want to utilize the villages trash hauler.
Homer Mayor Genevieve Suits says due to rising costs the village can no longer afford to provide trash collection services to hose properties at no additional expense.
Starting March 1st it will cost commercial property owners and multi family dwelling owners $9 per week to have their trash picked up. In addition those owners that choose to use the service must use a designated 95 gallon trash can that will be provided by the hauler.
Suits says those property owners don't have to use the village hauler and can hire their own hauler, but they must provide for trash collection.
For those that only want their recycling picked up they can pay $5 per week and receive a preapproved recycling bin.
For those that need a large container their are dumpster options available, the price for a 2 yard dumpster is over $150 a week a 4 yard dumpster is over $195 a week.
The owners of multi-family apartment houses with three or more units are also impacted by the change, Suits says they are considered a commercial property under village code.
Suits says she has presented the changes to the Homer Business Association where it was met with some concerns and reservations.
Suits points out that Homer is one of the few communities that even offers commercial trash collection services.
The village is sending letters to affected property owners to notify them of the change.
