Propane Tanker Crashes in Homer, No Gas Leak, Driver OK
Homer and Cortland Firefighters are on the scene of a rollover accident involving propane tanker truck in the Town of Homer.
Shortly after 9:30 this morning Firefighters along with State Police responded to a home at 2789 Route 13, just outside the hamlet of East Homer.
According to Homer Fire Cheif Mahlon Irish Jr., a driver from the Ferell Gas Company in Preble was making a residnetial propane gas delivery to the home at that address.
As the driver was leaving the property which, has a long steep driveway he lost control of the tanker on the ice covered pavement and slid about 50 feet into a nearby drainage ditch. The tanker truck which is loaded with about 2500 lbs. of gas came to rest on its side, fortunatly the tanker itself did not rupture and the diesel fuel tanks on the truck remained intact.
The Corltand City Hazardous Materials Response Team was at the scene making preperations to offload the gas into another tanker before local Tow Company Rick & Rich prepared to get the truck upright.
Cortland City Fire Captian Mike Tencate expected the process to take 8-10 hours to safely transfer the gas and prevent fuel spills from the truck. Capt. Tencate expected lights to be brought in as the work would contiune into the evening.
The driver of the truck was uninjured.
