Brothers Accused of Stealing and Crashing Two Vehicles in Cortland
Two Cortland men are facing multiple charges after stealing two vehicles Sunday night and causing extensive damage.

31 year old Matthew Walters  who resides at the Ramada Inn on River Street in Cortland and his brother 32 year old Shawn Walters of 4408 Route 11, Homer are facing multiple felonies in connection with a weekend crime spree.

The Walters brothers are accused of stealing a 2005 Ford Focus from a home at 168 Homer Ave. around 11:45 Sunday night. The pair drove the car out to the Town of Virgil where they crashed it into a ditch on Congdon Lane. After roaming the area, the men located a Ford pick-up truck with the keys in it and stole it.

The pair drove back into Cortland where City Police say they drove through a fence at Apex Machine and Tool on River Street, causing about $5 thousand dollars in damages.

The brothers drove the truck through nearby Dexter Park and proceeded to rut up a softball field and caused additional damage to the grounds, they drove back onto Central Avenue and crashed into some small trees causing additonal damage. At that point they abandoned the truck, and walked back to the Ramada Inn.

After returning to the hotel Matthew Walters became involved in a fight with his 12 year old step-son and the police were called.

After discovering the smashed up truck, officers were able to link the men to the stolen pick-up and the earlier vehicle theft.

Both men were arraigned in Cortland City Court on multiple felony charges including grand larceny and criminal mischief.

In addition Matt Walters was charged with a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child.

Matt Walters was sent to the Cortland County Jail on $2 thousand dollars cash and Shawn Walters was sent to the County Jail on $1 thousand dollars cash or $2 Thousand dollars bond. Both are due back in City Court on the 26th.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Department also has charges pending against the men in Virgil Town Court.
