Ithaca Homeless Man Dies As a Result Injuries Sustained in Tent Fire Wednesday
A homeless man who sustained burns in a tent fire Wednesday at an Ithaca homeless encampment has died from his injuries.

53 year Richard Sherman, who sustained burns in the tent fire Wednesday died in a regional burn unit Thursday afternoon due to complications from his injuries.
On Wednesday an employee at the Cayuga Lumber Company noticed smoke and flames coming from the homeless camp known as the Jungle. The employee used snow to extinguish Sherman’s clothing which had caught fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. At this time, no foul play is suspected.
Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick expressed his condolences and urged the community to work with human service agencies to move homeless people out of the encampment permanently.
Myrick says the community cannot help people in that setting, whether it’s providing addiction services, mental health services, or police and fire protection.
Mayor Myrick says allowing the homeless camp to continue is not an act of compassion – but an act of codependency.
